Why Can Frozen Sperm Be Preserved for So Long?
Modern assisted reproductive technology uses well-established cryopreservation techniques.
After being treated with specialized cryoprotective agents, sperm is stored in liquid nitrogen at approximately -196°C. Under these ultra-low temperatures, cellular metabolism comes to an almost complete stop, allowing sperm to remain in a stable preservation state rather than continuing to age as it would under normal temperatures.
For this reason, the goal of cryopreservation is not to "slow aging," but to preserve sperm as close as possible to its original condition for future use.
Does Long-Term Storage Reduce Sperm Quality?
Many people assume that the longer sperm is stored, the poorer its quality becomes.
In fact, numerous studies have shown that as long as the freezing procedure is properly performed and storage conditions remain stable, keeping sperm frozen for several years—or even longer—is not, by itself, a determining factor affecting fertility potential.
The main challenge lies in the freezing and thawing process, during which a small proportion of sperm may experience reduced motility due to temperature changes. As a result, post-thaw motility is typically slightly lower than before freezing, which is considered a normal characteristic of current cryopreservation technology.
However, in assisted reproduction, physicians focus on obtaining a sufficient number of viable, good-quality sperm rather than expecting every individual sperm cell to retain identical motility.
